“The Scholarship Fund’s objectives are to establish, maintain, and distribute scholarships received from persons, organizations, corporations, foundations, and philanthropies to Costa Rican children within the Nosara area who are in financial need.” — A scholarship committee member
What started out as a vision has quickly evolved into a reality thanks to the hard work and dedication of some, and the generosity of many. The volunteers of the DMA scholarship committee have worked tirelessly to raise community awareness and to organize fund raisers. Thanks to their efforts and to the support from the entire Nosara community via donations, raffles, and attendance at fundraising events, the fund will be able to support several new scholarship spaces for the 2009-2010 school year!
In an effort to continue supporting this wonderful cause, all proceeds from NosaraSurfCam.com will be put towards the tuition and expenses of Costa Rican children on scholarships who attend the Del Mar Academy. These youngsters are the children of devoted, deserving Nosara families who recognize the importance of an education. The parents made a great effort to apply for a scholarship position for their children, in which they completed a lengthy, multi-step application and interview process. Without scholarships, these children would not be able to attend DMA and receive the wonderful gift of an education: A gift that will change the life of each child and his/her family, and ultimately change the community at large.
Where is Del Mar Academy?
Del Mar Academy, founded and established in September 2007, lies nestled among seven acres of lush tropical landscape in the L-Section of Nosara, Costa Rica. The DMA is a private, bilingual, non-sectarian school currently offering academic programs to children between 20 months and 12 years of age. The DMA opened its doors to 17 students and now enrolls 60 students from 15 different nationalities. At Del Mar Academy, the concept of educating the whole child is central to everything we do. We follow the principles and philosophy of educator Maria Montessori, while incorporating the works of others in fields of developmental psychology and education. The DMA and its surrounding natural environment come ready with materials, equipment, and furniture that allow maximum exploration and use of the senses by our students. Currently, the DMA houses 6 classrooms, a library/computer room, an administrative office, four teachers’ offices, as well as a cafeteria, a soccer field, a basketball court, a volleyball court, an animal farm, a caretakers’ quarters, and a playground. In the future, the DMA will include a 24-meter swimming pool, a high school building, and additional specialty classrooms. The DMA places special emphasis on increasing students’ awareness and knowledge of environmental issues and challenges. We have incorporated environmentally-friendly elements throughout the property, such as recycling programs and composting projects. These elements are all aimed at increasing the children’s exposure to the wonder and richness of the natural beauty of Costa Rica and the importance of preserving this beloved land.
Who can apply for a scholarship?
The goal of the Scholarship Committee is to raise funds for Nosara children to attend the DMA. Basic criteria for scholarship students include:
Both parents must be CR citizens
The family must live in the immediate area of Nosara
The family does not otherwise have the means to pay for the child’s DMA tuition
Applications are available at the DMA office.
Currently, more than 10% of the students at the DMA are either on scholarship or privately sponsored. With your help we aspire to say ‘YES’ to another child. We are seeking people like you who can either fully or partially sponsor a child throughout the course of their education, or make a one-time donation towards the scholarship fund. Please donate today!
